Folkteatern, the People’s Theatre, in Gothenburg is one of the most happening spots for all things related to performing arts ranging from plays, mimes, poetry and social drama. The restaurant on the premises and its venues are popular hangout spots for dining and absorbing arts.
Located by Järntorget in Gothenburg, the venue has one or the other artistic event throughout the year. It is the venue for ‘a voice that wants to make the democratic conversation come alive through challenging performing arts’. Its own productions from the basis of the business and supported by the regional government: Västra Götaland Region. It has partnership and an economic association with 300 different organizations and associations such as trade unions, tenant associations and educational institutions.
Folkteatern is also a stage for national and international events at its three venues: Lilla Scenen, Fjärde Scenen and Foajén. The foyer is the venue for talks, lectures and music events and most of the times it is free entry.
The vision is it should be the contemporary theatre for the general public.
The mission is to work with quality performing arts for adults and young people, to make performing arts to be a fearless voice in society, to challenge and challenge norms and structures, and to be a creative workplace that prioritizes diversity.
Folkteatern has 11 people on its board and 2 representatives from the theater staff but it has no influence over repertoire selection, and the repertoire is decided by the theatre’s artistic advice. It has about 45 employees.
Folkteatern is one of Europe’s coolest areas! The Guardian newspaper noted, ‘Folkteatern, on nearby Olof Palmes Plats, hosts high-quality theater, film screenings, and other spoken-word and music performances.’
Folkteatern’s existence dates back to 1951 and had no fixed ensemble except for touring theater sets. It got its current name in 1958 and Mats Johansson as the manager and a permanent ensemble. In 1961 the repertoire focused on new and foreign drama and a large number of productions per year. During 1965, the theatre’s successful period began in terms of audience visits and production rate at the time of television in the living rooms.
